The 80%-20% Goal To Help You Make Good Food Choices

A healthy diet supplies enough calories to meet your energy needs, plus all the protein, essential fats, vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and fiber you need to stay healthy and help to prevent diseases.

To get everything your body needs from the food you eat, without taking in too many calories, MOST of your food should be full of nutrients. This can be hard when you are bombarded with “junk” foods that are loaded with calories and have very little other nutritional value.

This is not another diet book – it’s an explanation and listing of all the nutrient-rich foods available in your supermarket and restaurants. Use it to help you make good food choices. The 80% - 20% Goal.

A reasonable goal for anyone who wants a healthy diet is to try to fill 80% of your plate with foods from the Food Lists: mostly fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and other seeds; what you do with the remaining 20% is entirely up to you.

Special Situations
Almost everyone can use these Food Lists and follow the 80%-20% goal. See the section on Special Situations for extra helpful tips if you are diabetic, need to lower cholesterol or blood pressure, or want to lose weight.

You'll also find tips for seniors, children, active teens and athletes; and people who eat in restaurants often or are just too busy.

You can read Dr. Mirkin's Good Food Book online - you can turn the pages and read any chapter you are interested in...I think that is so great!

Do Multivitamins Compensate for Eating Mostly Junk Food?

My thoughts on this subject in answer to a parent's question. It won't hurt to give your children multivitamins I suppose, but it is also the parents' responsibility to see that they don't eat a lot of junk food...

The problem is that even if the junk food didn't hurt them it prevents there being room or appetite left for the healthy food that builds a strong body and an active mind.

Parents can be a good example by taking good care of their own well-being and fitness so they can hope to live a long healthy life.

We tend to forget that our body is a magnificent machine worth more than the greatest fortune!

Walking to School!: an early start for fitness

Starting simple

When beginning a walking school bus, remember that
the program can always grow.

It often makes sense to start with a small bus and see how it works. Pick a single neighborhood that has
a group of parents and children who are interested. It’s like a carpool—without the car—with the added benefits of exercise and visits with friends
and neighbors.

For an informal bus:Invite families who live nearby
to walk. Pick a route and take a test walk. Decide how often the group will walk together.
Have fun!

I thought I was hearing something new when my NPR station in Seattle WA, (KUOW) broadcast the hour about kids walking or biking to school and then when I searched Google to learn more, 10 pages out of thousands were showing!

I might conclude that I wasn't well informed on the subject and I'm afraid I have lots of company... not many people I talk to seem to show much interest in the subject!

We know how difficult it is sometimes to maintain a satisfying state of wellness even as
adults... it does seem very important to help children start out with good habits.

I hope the concept grows - it would be so much fun to see children walking in our neighborhoods
again!

Walking or Biking to School

I heard on NPR (day to day)yesterday that one man, a Minnesota teacher whose name I didn't catch - is asking for a 6 million dollar government program to start a movement to get kids to walk or
bike to school - this would be named 'Safe Routes to School'.

He says that it's time for everyone to take notice of the growing number of overweight kids - in a rope jumping group he was directing a lot of the kids lasted 30 seconds!

Although 3/4 of the kids coming to this teacher's school live within a mile from school only 1/4 walk and 20% of the trafficcongestion is caused by parents driving or waiting in their idlingcars to drop of their kids!

One parent said when interviewed "if I walk my kids to school it will take 20 minutes,.. driving only takes 3 minutes! Parents also worry about safety so the answer to that concern is to have one or two parents walk a group - 'walk-pooling parents!

In the eighties, when I was directing a not-for-profit Child Care Center,we had before and after school kindergartners that we had grown on site, four-year olds just do that...they become five-year olds so one year we started the school year with five kindergartner boys! The level of energy at 8 am was really high - if the weather was decent they would be on the playground with one staff person who would then drive them in the van at school time.

One morning the irony of the situation hit me - here was a staff person supervising these rambuctious kids on our playground - why wouldn't she walk them instead? It was a little over a mile...so she did and she got the benefit of the walk back too!

The problems of obesity have caught the attention of the whole nation, is it time for more grassroot initiatives to get our kids moving?

Should grandparents, who take their own state of wellness very seriously, voice their alarm for the upcoming generations' health? What do you think? Do you have any suggestions?

Kids Don’t Work Out, They Play
By: Ainsley Laing MSc

The other day, I was working out to music in my living room when my 8 year old daughter and two of her friends came in. Naturally, questions followed: what am I doing, why am I doing it, etc. After a while, the three of them joined in.

Of course, kids being kids, my workout soon expanded into a free movement and dance session. The sound levels increased with lots of laughter and squeals. After a while, the festive atmosphere was too attractive even for a grown up friend of mine to resist and she joined in. What started as a workout became a party!

Kids have such an amazing way of moving just to move which we adults sometimes forget how to do. With a few exceptions (obesity, physical disability etc) kids don’t need organized workouts, personal trainers, posh workout clothes or equipment to get them moving.

Have you ever watched children playing on a playground? Now that’s a tough work out! They move, run, jump, tumble down and get up again over and over. They move because moving feels good, not because they “have to” or “need to” exercise.

Most of us adults did a fair number of physical activities involving free play when we were young. How many of those activities do we do now? If not, why not? The common phrase I hear from adults (I have heard myself say this) is “I used to be able to do that, but now I am too old”.

Honestly, is being too old a valid reason or just an excuse to allow ourselves not to do something? Personally, when I say “I am too old to do that”, I really mean I am afraid of hurting myself. I know I was afraid of getting hurt as a kid too. What did I say back then? Certainly not “I am too old”. I would have said, I am afraid of hurting myself…then I would give it a try – again and again.

This idea of giving up things as we become “too old” seems to be a self-fulfilling prophesy. Stopping activities because we are too old means becoming more sedentary and hence less excited about daily life…just plain old. To quote Barbara Morris, author of “Put Old on Hold”: Who decides when you are old? You Do!

Ok, ok, of course, many of you reading this would disagree. But more and more people are saying ”I am not going to stop doing activities that I did when I was younger”. Stopping is just not an option for these determined and vibrant people. Of course, because of past injuries, safety issues or whatnot, the way of doing the activities might have to be modified.

Back to the free play idea…free play is about learning. Learning keeps us young. This is true for our bodies as well as our brains. Our bodies learn with use or unlearn with disuse. If we are doing the same activity over and over, our bodies will learn to do those things very well and will unlearn those things that we don’t do anymore. Likewise, our bodies will learn to do new things that we take up.

We fitness trainers convey this notion to clients as a “practical explanation” that there is a need to do a variety of activities to keep from hitting a fitness plateau and losing motivation – often referred to as cross training.

It would be very difficult to convince adults that they need to go to the playground and just play like a kid, so we apply lots of science and logic to the argument. But free play is the message. New experiences, challenges and fun keep us young.

As an example, my current partner, a 40-something fitness buff, recently decided that he wanted to take up something completely new for his body, Kung Fu. After the first lesson he said that he was really sore and said he felt injured because “the guy really did hit me hard”.

I thought for sure he wouldn’t continue. The next day he was buying special Kung Fu shoes with great enthusiasm. Hmm …like a kid on the playground ... he tries, gets hurt and tries again. Why? Because he is doing it - FOR FUN.

Although, doing the same activities over and over is a comfortable routine, getting out of the comfort zone expands us physically, mentally and spiritually. How to get out of the comfort zone? Play like a kid!
